The cost of hosting the Canadian University Rowing Championships has steadily increased over the

last years. A survey of the CURA coaches showed that a majority interpreted fees as being very low

in comparison to other competitions. A budget analysis of the traditional hosting Universities has

determined that on average, a school must agree to covering a 17 000 dollar shortfall in order to

host. Local organizing committees typically try to close this gap by attracting sponsors such as

municipalities and hotels. Even then, it is rare that a hosting group covers all costs and is left to hold

the remaining burden along with head coaches being seconded to organize the event. In short, there

is little to incentivize hosting and increasing the quality of the event.

We propose that the per competitor fee increase from 50 to 85 dollars and team fees increase from

100 to 150 dollars starting in 2021. One of the major costs of the event is the following banquet. In

general, coaches feel that this is a staple that should be protected; however, it also results in a

financial burden for the LOC. The increase in fees will help cover the cost of the banquet.

In addition, the costs associated with the event should be reviewed at the end of each 5-year cycle

(east-west-east-west-other) by the VP CURC and implemented for the first year of the next 5-year

2

hosting cycle. This will ensure that the costs associated with the event are appropriate and fluctuate

with the needs of the LOCs and CURA.
