CANADIAN UNIVERSITY ROWING ASSOCIATION Annual Meeting

This committee considered two inquiries. One regarding the inclusion of an uncertified roster of athletes from the Montreal Rowing Club in the regatta, and the other was regarding a suggestion to suspend the eligibility criteria for the 2021 Championship.

The decisions around these two questions were presented at a subsequent CURA meeting and are summarized here for your reference.

Issue 1: Registration of Montreal RC athletes for the 2021 CURC Regatta without an officially certified roster.

The eligibility Committee recommended that Montreal RC athletes be allowed to compete at the 2021 CURC as this is consistent with the principles under the CURA Eligibility Policy to “promote ethics, fair play, and the opportunity for all eligible athletes to participate in interuniversity sport while pursuing their education.” Head Coach Phil Hedrei submitted a women’s and men’s roster as per the template provided, indicating the years of eligibility consumption, confirming that the student athletes listed meet the academic requirements outlined under Section 3 of the CURA Eligibility Policy. This roster will be accepted without official certification.

Issue 2: Would CURA consider suspending student athlete eligibility criteria for the 2021 CURC Regatta?

The committee recommended that academic requirements outlined under Section 3 of the Eligibility Policy be upheld for the 2021 CURC regatta, given that the suspension of these fundamental criteria would impact the integrity of the regatta as an intercollegiate competition.

I would like to thank members of the Eligibility Committee, Rami Maassarani and Jennifer Durward, for providing their assessment and recommendations on these issues. Phil Hedrei recused himself from comment on both issues citing conflict of interest.
