Many years ago ... I was a believer that William Braswell, who died 1720-21 was the son of Robert and Susannah Braswell. However, I learned that the PROBATE RECORDS of Susannah Braswell are DOCUMENTED PROOF that her son was alive in 1732 and was the executor of her will. I had previously thought that it could not be proved one way or the other, but I wanted to be sure due to all the controversy, so I decided to solicit the opinion of a NEUTRAL NON Braswell researcher. Below is his reply:
Ann, it seems pretty obvious that the William Braswell named in the will as a son of Susannah was still alive in 1732. The will names "my son" William Braswell as an executor and in 1732 the Isle of Wight court calls him the "executor named therein." Obviously, the court thought he was the same person, since they specifically call him the same person. No way could he have died in 1720 -- he was alive in 1732.
In addition, his son could not have stood in his place as executor. An "executor" can only be named by the author of the will -- that is the definition of the term. If a replacement executor were appointed, he would be called an "administrator". (In this case, an "administrator with the will annexed".)
It is silly to claim that the executor in 1732 was anyone other than the son of Susannah Braswell.
I'm not a Braswell researcher, but it would seem to me that this was a different William Braswell than the ones in North Carolina.

This is a large quantity of documented evidence which for the most part focuses on connecting Micajah Braswell and Mary Woodard as parents of Samuel Braswell who married Sarah J Hart about 1825 in Robertson County, Tennessee. We know the story starts in England, and that Reverend Robert Bracewell came to America. We also know he left a Will which identified a son Richard who also left a Will.
Said Richard had a son William who died in his father's lifetime, therefore he is not mentioned in the Will, however, he was a contemporary of the children who are in the Will. It is important to note that William's descendants bear the same Y-DNA as the descendants of Reverend Robert Bracewell 1611-1668, which is verifiable at FTDNA. In fact, William Braswell's descendants exclusively bear unique branch markers at DYS570 AND Y-GATA-H4 as can be seen in Group 1a.
William has erroneously been identified numerous times by numerous people as the son of Robert Bracewell JR and his wife Susannah Burgess which has caused controversy among descendants. But if one takes the time to examine the 1692 Isle of Wight Will of Richard Towle (Will & Deed Book 1, Vol. 2, p. 323) and the Y-DNA results at FTDNA, one can see that DNA doesn't lie, and neither did Richard Towle when he identified "my three youngest children of Susannah Braswell, Richard, William and Elizabeth Braswell" in his Will. Susannah's probate records also prove that her son William was alive and well when he presented his mother's Will in court in 1732 as the "Executor Therein named who made Oath thereto".
The above mentioned William, son of Richard, had a son William identified in a deed as the heir of Wm Bracewell deceased. He left a Will in 1785 and identified a son Samuel Braswell. This son Samuel also left a Will which identified his son Micajah. Micajah died in 1804 and his estate records consist of an Administrator's Bond and an Inventory.
A deep dive into all Braswell records combined with DNA was required to find the father of Samuel Braswell 1800-1852. My brother provided the Y-DNA test which can be seen at FTDNA kit # 134830, and yes, he has the above mentioned unique branch markers which to date guarantee descent from a son of William Braswell II.
Consider that William II had five sons, four of whom had wills and the other, estate records. This narrowed the search to a grandson of William II who was in South Carolina (or across the border in Robeson Co., NC) and might have reason to name a son Samuel. My Samuel Braswell's solid birth location is South Carolina at or about the year 1800. Records and Autosomal DNA matches of myself and siblings place us most likely under Samuel Braswell and Sarah Hunt, which leaves us with Micajah, Wilson and Sampson.
My Great Uncle, Roy Bennett Braswell thought our line was was Sampson, (and Robert Braswell Jr and Susannah Burgess also for that matter). However, Sampson's estate records disqualify his son Samuel being our line as he was appointed an administrator of his father Sampson's estate on June 5, 1865 with his brother, William.
To be fair to Uncle Roy, in those days they did not have computers and records readily available as we do now. They used typewriters and carbon paper, postage stamps and had to travel to courthouses. Uncle Roy wanted his mistakes corrected by us, his younger family members, stating that he was sure there would be mistakes. However, certain people in the family refused to do so ... which is a huge disservice to Uncle Roy. In his defense, he was only a couple of counties and a brother off track.
But getting on with the sons of Samuel Braswell and Sarah Hunt ... Wilson moved to Georgia and died there. There is no evidence of my Samuel Braswell ever being in Georgia.
This leaves us with Micajah Braswell and the more I looked at this overlooked Braswell the more interesting he became. I discovered that he married Mary Woodard of Nash County, North Carolina, that her father lived on Pigbasket Creek, as did the Braswells. That Mary Woodards' brother David married Elizabeth Braswell (sister of Micajah) and moved to Robertson County, Tennessee. Another sister of Mary Woodard, Elizabeth, married Daniel Holland and moved to Robertson County, Tennessee and that sister's son was the administrator of my Samuel Braswell's estate in 1852! Then I found a widow Mary Bracewell (Micajah died about 1804) in the 1807 Spring Creek Red River Church Minutes along with a widow Holland and this was the first evidence I had found of any Braswells in Robertson County. I had hit pay dirt and the happiness was unimaginable. I had busted my brick wall.

The evidence shows that Samuel Braswell's family of Robertson County, Tennessee is connected to David Woodard and Elizabeth Braswell, and Elizabeth Woodard who married (1) Daniel Holland, (2) Wm Taylor, and Dempsey Woodard Taylor, who is the son of Elizabeth Woodard and William Taylor.

>> SUMMARY: The evidence shows that widow Mary Bracewell moved to Robertson County, Tennessee by 1807. Her brother David Woodard also moved there. David's 1st wife was Elizabeth Braswell, sister of Micajah Braswell. Mary's sister Elizabeth moved there with her husband Daniel Holland who died shortly thereafter and she was left with four small sons. She then married Wm Taylor and had one more son Dempsey Woodard Taylor, who was the administrator of Samuel Braswell's estate in 1852, said Samuel naming his only daughter, Mary.
