Due to the fact that numerous people insist on claiming this Sampson Braswell in DeKalb County, Tennessee, as the father of Samuel Braswell in Robertson County, Tennessee, I am going to list the records here which plainly show that to be untrue. Please don't perpetuate false genealogies. Follow the records.
Sampson Braswell is the son of Samuel Braswell and Sarah Hunt, and both of them have been identified in Wills.
1781 - January 10, Nuncupative Will of Sarah Hunt: William Braswell Sr swore oath to one of the justices that he heard Sarah Hunt on her death bed about the 20th of December last. She mentioned her children Jesse Hunt, Dicey Hunt and her daughter Morning, daughter Sarah Braswell, Henry Long if he ever returns from the War. Judith Hunt swore she was there .. witnessed by Thomas Hunt. (Nash County, North Carolina)
1785- March 4, William Braswell Will: Wife Margaret, Children: Jacob Braswell, Arthur Braswell, Patience West, Dorcas Hooks, Pattey Bridgers, Samuel Braswell. Witnessed by West Daniel, Micajah Braswell, Jacob Warrenton. (Nash County North Carolina Wills 1663-1978)
1794 - Samuel Braswell's Will dated November 30, 1794 mentions his wife Sarah, sons Sampson, Micajah, Wilson and daughters Elizabeth Woodard, Margaret Braswell, Quinny and Sally. The Will was proved in Court in November, 1795. (Nash County, North Carolina)
1799 - Archibald Griffin was appointed guardian of Sampson and his sister Sally on February 11, 1799. Archibald Griffin was also the guardian of Quinny, as stated in Quinny's estate records. This means these children were underage when their father died. (Nash County, North Carolina) NOTE: Orphan means under 21 with a deceased father. 1799-21=1778. Born AFTER 1778.
KNOW all men by these presents, That we, Arch Griffin Dempsey Braswell & Thomas Whitfield are held and firmly bound unto Denton Mason & Lewis Dortch Esquires, and the rest of the Justices assigned to keep the peace for Nash county, in the just and full sum of one hundred & fifty pounds current money, to be paid to the said Justices their heirs, executors, administrators and assigns: To the which payment well and truly to be made, we bind ourselves, and every of us, our and each of our heirs, executors, and administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these presents. Dom. 1799 Whereas the above bounden Archibald Griffin hath been this day, by the worshipful court of said county, appointed guardian to Sampson Braswell orphan of Samuel Braswell deceased; Now the condition of the above obligation is such, that if the said Arch Griffin guardian as aforesaid, shall well and truly discharge his said guardianship, by taking care of and improving all of the estate belonging to the said orphan; and shall also settle his guardianship accounts with the court of said county, as is required by law; and that he will deliver up the said Sampson Braswell orphan, as aforesaid, when he shall attain lawful age, all such estate as he ought of right to be possesed of, or sooner if required, agreeable to the true intent and meaning of the act of the General Assembly in such case made and provided; then this obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. 1806 - December 6, Sampson Braswell sold 608 acres on Pigbasket Creek that he inherited from his father which was witnessed by Samuel Williams, (Nash County, North Carolina Deed Book 8 Page 183) By this time Samuel Williams had married Sampson's sister, Sally.
1810 - Priscilla "Brazel" is on the membership list of the SALEM BAPTIST CHURCH in Smith/DeKalb County, Tennessee.
1819 - William Williams' Will: Wife Lucreasy Williams, daughters Betsy Griffin, Cloe Melton, Mary Williams, son Samuel Williams, daughter Priscilla Braswell, son William Williams, daughter Lucreasy Hartt, daughter Nancy Braswell, grandchildren Jerusy, Jonas and Ambrose Robinson. Following are some of the census records which clearly prove that Sampson Braswell of DeKalb County, Tennessee does have a son named Samuel and that this Samuel lived near him and had a son named Sampson. Sampson's son Samuel was also an administrator of his estate in 1865, long after the Robertson County Samuel Braswell died.
