Interzone report: August-september 2008
Hi all,
I have not sent any report in August because there were not enough news due to the holidays. So most of the news here concern September.
I have had the visit of Vasha and Egle on the way to Portugal : great to see them ! And I have a job, which leaves me less time for the Zone's work. Though, here is the account of the recent news :
Writings and publishing
Interzone Editions
The introduction has been completed at http://www.inter-zone.org/presentation.htm , a paragraph on the structure of economy of this publishing enterprise has been added.
The Time of the Naguals - Le Temps des Naguals
I am prepairing for Interzone Editions the definitive version of Le Temps des Naguals : Autour de Burroughs et Gysin. The book was started as a compilation at the beginning of Interzone in August 1997. I had written a French version during the previous years, containing Burroughs' interviews, articles, and a French translation of "The Last Words of Hassan Sabbah", which I had submitted to Burroughs who gave me his agreement and encouraged me to go on.
As the book was not very big in 1997, I proposed to the Zoners to add their own texts on Burroughs and Gysin and make a compilation of the whole.
As a result, the French book has been completed since, and there are a number of articles from Zoners, in English, and other languages for the different translations of the Last Words.
So here I need the point of view of the people who got involved in this project, as before the texts were just put on line, and now I am going to publish it officially.
There are different possibilities here :
1. Make a French book, Le Temps des Naguals, which will contain the French texts, an an English one : The Time of the Naguals, which will contain the English ones
2. Make a French -English one which will gather the whole, with the original texts in English by Burroughs and Gysin with their French translations.
Both will contain illustrations : original pictures of Burroughs and Gysin, and some by Paul O'Donovan and other zoners' ones.
I am going to make a summary of both with the number of pages, and see the result then.
Concerning the money which I shall get from the sales, as those books are a common work, I propose to use the money for common purpose in the zone, which we shall decide later on, and use this opportunity to go on experimenting the non-Aristotelian economy we have started to formulate since 2000.

Joujouka Black Eyes the 1995 classic release by The Master Musicians of Joujouka is now available at our store. The CD was the first production by Frank Rynne of The Master Musicians of Joujouka and was the first release by the Masters on the Sub Rosa label. Recorded over a nine week period in 1994; it features both large ensembles and small groups of the Sufi masters playing in informal settings.. The CD contains 16 tracks including Brian Jones Joujouka Very Stoned. This tribute to Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones is a standard in the musicians repertoire.
Joujouka Black Eyes has been hard to come by in recent years but following the success of the Brian Jones 40th Anniversary Festival in July 2008 the CD is now available again.
"The contrast between the earthy drum rhythms and the delicate filigree of the flute work, sounding like some avian fantasy, is luscious. Listeners who only know this genre through recordings like Apocalypse Across the Sky owe it to themselves to hear Joujouka's flip side, the one without one ear tilted toward the world music market."

Mojo Magazine October Issue Feature Report on Brian Jones Festival in Joujouka by Mark Paytress OUT NOW!
The October issue of Mojo magazine carries Mark Paytress' 2 page feature article on the Brian Jones 40th Anniversary Festival in Joujouka You Should be Trancin'.
Mark reports on the his experiences at the festival and talks to Anita Pallenberg, John Dunbar, Mallim Ali Abdelsam El Attar and Frank Rynne. The article also features photography by Jill Furmanovsky.
Mark and Jill spent 4 days in Joujouka. They really got to know the Master Musicians and the village staying off the village square with Mohamed Hatmi aka Boujeloud and family.
"For Four days and nights MOJO gets a taste of life as part of that collective"
"No one can compete with goat man Boujeloud.... whose manic, shiver'n'shake moves makes Cocker, Curtis and Fay Fife seem absolutely sluggish" Mark Paytress , Mojo.

One of the music worlds' most enduring and celebrated photographers Jill Furmanovsky photographed the entire proceedings at the Brian Jones 40th anniversary Festival. Jill was great company and got on brilliantly with the Master Musicians and all the guests. We can't wait to see the results. You can see Jill's awarding winning work with everyone from Led Zepplin, Rolling Stones, Thin Lizzy, Ramones, The Clash etc and especially her photographing of Oasis' entire career, on her website
