Word: Converting a Master Document into a normal document

Let's say you have a complicated document, which consists of two different mail merges.

Since a Microsoft Word document can have most one mail merge, your need to create each mail merge in a separate document. Finally to combine them all, you will need a Master Document.

To convert these documents into a format suitable for the customer, follow these steps:

  1. Open all the subdocuments and update the Mail Merge.

  2. Save the subdocuments.

  3. Copy the docx files to a subfolder called "to print".

  4. Navigate to the the subfolder "to print". NOTE: Ensure you are in this subfolder, before performing the next steps, as these operations will permanently affect subdocuments.

  5. Open the main document.

6. Expand Subdocuments > Opening this document will run the following SQL command: "No" to any document updates.

7. Click on a subdocument.

8. Outlining > Show Document > Unlink:

9. Repeat steps 7 & 8 for each subdocument.

10. Close the Outline View.

11. Select the text of the subdocuments.

12. Press "CTRL-SHIFT-F9" to convert all fields to text in the subdocuments.

13. Save the document.

14. Delete "ANNEX A.docx" and "ANNEX B.docx".
