Backing up and restoring a computer with Pointsec

For images, see the document attached at the bottom of this page.

Backing up an image with Pointsec

Install Image for Windows normally.

If you are using Image for Linux for the bare metal restore process, install the “Image for Windows – Linux CD Boot Files) CD from the TeraByte licensed downloads area.

Using Regedit, modify the UpperFilters list to move the Pointsec driver before Phylock, under the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

See Terabyte Unlimited’s Knowledge Base article “Using TrueCrypt with TeraByte’s Imaging Programs”:

Reboot the computer to allow the upper filters change to take affect.

Run Image for Windows.

Select Backup (Full) then click “Settings”:

Choose the following settings:

Click OK.

When selecting the partitions to image, ONLY choose the partition, NOT the drive (otherwise the image will be the entire encrypted hard drive including Pointsec encryption):

Choose where you want to save the backup and press Next.

Choose the filename and press Next.

Choose the following settings (note that Validate Bye-for-byte will typically fail):

Follow any prompts and wait until the process has finished. Ignore any errors concerning bad sectors.

Restoring an image that was originally Pointseced

Insert the Image for Linux CD (or System Recovery DVD) and boot it.

Choose Image for Linux:

Check “Global Settings” then “Next”.

Ensure the settings are as below then choose “OK”:

At the Main Menu, select “Restore” then “Next”.

Ensure the Restore mode is “Normal” and “Next”:

Choose the file access method and choose “Next”.

Choose the drive interface and choose “Next”.

Choose the file drive and choose “Next”.

Choose the file and choose “Next”.

Restore the entire drive by selecting all check boxes:

Choose the drive interface to restore to and choose "Next".

Choose the target drive to restore to and choose "Next".

Choose the partition to restore to and choose "Next".

Select the following options and choose "Next":

Choose "Start" and wait for the process to complete.

Remove the Image for Linux CD and reboot.

If the computer hangs with a black screen, start the entire procedure again - for some reason it will work the second time around.

If required, re-install Pointsec to encrypt the drive.
