The Midland Painted Turtle will feature a very smooth and unkeeled green/olive brown shells. The shell will also feature red to black margins, a color pattern that may also be present on the skin of the animal. A very dark plastral blotch will be present on each turtle, and vary in shape/intensity for each individual. Large scutes will run alternating, unlike in its Eastern counterpart in which the scutes will run straight across. Luckily for identification purposes, the Eastern variation is not present (Conant and Collins 184-185).
