The spots on a Spotted Salamander can number up to 50 in total, being a yellow to orange in coloration on a black, slate, or bluish black. The ventral side will also be slate-gray (Conant and Collins 439)
The Spotted Salamander can be found throughout the Eastern region of the United States from the the Eastern area of Texas to the Coast. It inhabits hardwood and mixed forests with a swamp within the vicinity in which eggs are laid. Like other Ambystoma, the salamander will use burrows made by other animals. Threats to the species includes timber harvesting, habitat destruction, water quality reduction (specifically lower pH). The IUCN lists the animal as a species of Least Concern.
