Eastern Worm Snake
Adult Size: 19 - 28cmRecord: 33.7cm
At Hatching: 8.3 - 10cm
Youth: Darker than adults
Easily mistaken for an Earth Worm at first glance, the Eastern Worm Snake has an extremely slender body with brown earthen coloration with 1 or two dorsal scales being pink on the lower sides. Hardly ever found wandering above ground, mostly under stones, boards, logs, or underground where it feeds on earthworms and insects. When held, it will attempt to push its way through openings in fingers much like it would push its way through rocks or dirt (Conant and Collins 333-334).
