As the name suggests, the Black Rat Snake has a plain, black coloration with a shine. Areas on the skin beneath the scales may exhibit a white, yellow, orange, or red coloration and the ventral side will show gray, brown on white, or yellowish patterns that are described by Conant and Collins as diffused or clouded with some indication of checker boarding, especially towards the chin. The chin and the throat of the animal will feature white or cream coloration. The anal section is divided and scales will have a longitudinal ridge on dorsal side.
In youth, the Black Snake will have a stronger dorsal pattern (body and tail) with a more gray body which can be mistaken for Gray Rat Snakes - this pattern darkens as the animal ages (Cnnant and Collins 357).
