These dry land turtles are what many of us will commonly see on the side of the road or in our back yard. The Eastern Box Turtle will feature a high dome-like shell that may be a mixture of yellow, orange, olive, black, brown, dark or light colors. Four toes will be found on the hind feet. Males will feature a rear lobe of plastron with a central concave area; their eyes may be red. Females will normally feature brown eyes and their plastrons will be more flat (Conant and Collins 160-161).
