The Timber Rattlesnake is a highly varied species in terms of patterns and coloration. Luckily, for identification purposes, it is the only rattlesnake found in our area. If you wish to be absolutely certain, there are four distinct variations, two of which are likely to be found in our area
Yellow Variation: Black or dark brown V-shaped crossbands will be present on a ground color. These cross bands will break up and form a row of dark spots down the back with a row on each side of the body
Timber Rattlesnake
Southern Variation: Black crossbands on a pinkish bluff with a gray, tan, or ground color. Broad middorsal stripes will split crossbands in half as they get closer to the head. Dark stripes will be present just behind the eyes (Conant and Collins 408-409)
