Looking at the work of artist Shen Zhou
 1427-1509
 (from the Chinese - Ming Dynasty), 5th graders were encouraged to think about what it would be like to be in such a landscape, and why Shen Zhou used the technique he did.

Next, they were asked to find a landscape in a book, out the window, or online that inspired them. They used a monochromatic color scheme and added a haiku to describe their emotions as they imagined themselves in their landscape painting.

Following that, they learned about Atmospheric Perspective and made work illustrating that too!
