Found Object Treasure Map Model (STEAM)


Application/Recall of Prior Knowledge: Students are learning about maps in Grade 2 social studies.


Objective: Students will imagine a place to bury a treasure, then they will use knowledge of maps to build a found object model of a treasure map.


Vocabulary: symbol, map key/legend, compass rose, assemblage, installation

Our inspiration was Maya Lin

Lots of artists use maps in their work, and maps are very interesting to draw. Connecting to Social Studies, we learned about map making and building in art. Our objective was to imagine a place to bury treasure. 2nd graders used their knowledge of maps to draw diagrams. They learned some new vocabulary like symbols, compass rose, assemblage, and installation. We looked at the work of Maya Lin as our inspiration.

First 2nd graders learned about maps and sketched their own ideas of what a treasure map might look like.

They used these skills to build a map out of found objects. They also learned how to label their maps. Please take a look at the slide show below to see what they created at home. Let's hope they cleaned up!
