Paper Sculpture inspired by Hilma af Klint & Wassily Kandinsky

Hilma af Klint & Wassily Kandinsky

Hilma af Klint was a Swedish artist, (1862 - 1944), who until recently was relatively unknown. Her abstract paintings are often large and colorful and include symbols to represent her spiritualist ideas. As a child, Klint spent summers on her family’s farm on a lake island in Sweden. She became inspired by the natural world and this can be seen in her work. Influenced by her father who was a naval commander, she was also interested in mathematics which is visible in the geometry in her paintings.

First graders were encouraged to create abstract cut paper works, inspired by Klint and also Wassily Kandinsky. The second part of the project was photographing their 3-D pieces and lighting them creatively to make interesting shadows.
