Kepler-452b

Some 3rd-grade students (who came to our extra art zoom classes), entered a Living Worlds Space Art Contest!

" Life on Kepler-452b "

My art shows that the creatures living in Kepler are intelligent and good builders. I drew the animal on the top like this because I wanted to show the differences and the similarities. I wanted to add things like buildings and flying animals to represent that Kepler has taken a piece of Earth, but has added a unique touch to it.

Cooper

I was interested in thinking of all the different organisms that would live on Kepler with twice the gravity. I tried to think of different cells and structures that would develop.

This is my entry for the Kepler 4-5-2-b competition shows a city with lots of action going on. I thought it might not be so different from our idea of a future world.

The species seem advanced. They launched a rocket, which would be pretty hard to do on that planet. They launched a rocket to scan the ring around the planet. Kelper 452-B is very rocky with lots of craters.

I know that Kepler 452b is a rocky planet and has its own sun. Its strong gravity would mean its organisms would be very small and maybe they would fly low to the ground. It is a lot older than earth and so there wouldn’t be any animals present.

Kirra

The aliens on Kepler 452b have three eyes so that they can see forward, to each side, and if they want, backwards. They hover over the ground so that if lava flows, they can lift off off the ground a little so that they don’t burn. Their skin has long scales, pointy, kind of like teeth, but flat and they lift up like fins on a fish so that they can ride the currents of the water on the planet. Also, they can just make stuff by thinking of it (like buildings and strollers).

Kepler 452b is rocky with lots of volcanos. There are some fox-like creatures that have adapted to the dry environment. Their paws can withstand the heat. They look in the craters for food to eat and hunt in packs.

Sam

The alien organism’s body has tentacles that glide smoothly over land. The big eye helps it search for prey.

Zoe

This is my idea of what you would see if you were to orbit Kepler 452b. It is a small rocky planet with 2 x the gravity of earth, so its organisms would have to be smaller too.

Scientists have found thousands of exoplanets!

Even though scientists know that thousands of exoplanets exist, they can not see what the surface of these planets might look like. Use all your knowledge about Earth and how animals have adapted to their environments to imagine life on Kepler-452b. Become scientific illustrators and use your scientific knowledge to create amazing art.

Quick Facts

  • Kepler-452b is located around 1,400 light-years from Earth in the constellation of Cygnus.

  • It is one of the smallest planets yet discovered that orbits in the habitable zone (called the 'Goldilocks Zone'), around a sun-like star.

  • Kepler 452b orbits its star at a similar distance that the Earth orbits the sun.

  • A year on Kepler 452b is only 21 days longer than a year on Earth.

  • It’s small size indicates that it is most probably a rocky planet.

  • It is thought that the force of gravity on Kepler 452b would be twice as strong as Earth's gravity.

  • It is 6 billion years old, which is 1.5 billion years older than our solar system.

  • often referred to as "Earth's Cousin"
