Initial Tiles

Combine your initial with what you like about living in California.

5th graders were asked to reflect on the Earth, Earth Day, and the environment. They were encouraged to think about what they appreciated about being outside, and living in California, especially during Covid-19,. They designed a tile with their initial (or initials), using these ideas, and hand-built their tile during our first class back on campus. Glazing their tiles during our second class and sharing and writing these descriptions during our final class of the year, completed our art experience for the 20/21 school year.

Anika

I was inspired by nature. The initial A is made like a mountain. On the left it is day and on the right it is night. The principles of design I used are balance, repetition, and emphasis. I like the contrasting colors and the way the 'A' looks. I would improve the mountains on the side if I made my tile again.

Neyum

The tile shows waves crashing against the shore and the sun and moon. It also pictures an N which is colored red to pop out. I made the N and the waves out of clay coils and the sun and moon out of clay circles. I made the grains of sand by poking shallow holes in the clay with a toothpick. I used emphasis on the N, moon, and sun using colors that stand out.

Anna

I was thinking about how we need all the four elements to survive. I used contrast, balance, variety, and unity. I like that the sun in the center frames my initial. If I made this again I would change some of the colors because the fire element stands out and ruins the balance.

Ario

I made a gold course for my clay tile because I have enjoyed being outside and learning golf. I used contrast to make the flag stand out, and colored the path of the golf ball differently to make it stand out. I also used proportion to make the flag pop out. I look forward to playing golf again.

Grace

I used pattern in my tile. I like turtles and tried to make turtle shells. The dots are supposed to be frog eggs. I like frogs, snakes and turtles. If I could change anything I would show New Orleans.

Leila

I love to hike, camp, bike, and anything related to nature. The principles of design I used were emphasis, pattern, variety, and balance. My initials are emphasized with the bright orange against a blue background. The petals of my flowers show pattern. Variety is shown through different colors and balance is used in the placement of the flowers. I like all the different colors and shapes I used. If I could change anything I would not have put indentations in the background sky.

Gavin

My inspiration was a claymation of the beach. To make my tile pop out i used emphasis with a dark and light ocean. If I could redo my tile, I would make it more of a nighttime scene. and add a moon.

Zar

I decided to make my tile celebrate diversity in California.I made a beach and then hills, or mountains in the background. I used unity because the strong colors of the letters look interesting on the subtle background colors. I like how I wrapped the Z around the tree.

Eric

I was showing the fun stuff I did over the break. I showed contrast. I like the colors, but if I made it again I would make the car not look like a sheep.

Lily-Bee

My Life and experience inspired my choices in making my tile. I used emphasis and balance. I like the colors and vibe. I would change the precision of the detail.

Brady

I was inspired to make my tile by my lacrosse team. I used movement for my design. I like the green color on my tile. If I could make one thing differently, I would use more color.

Nicole

I went with some friends to the beach and we had a really fun time together, so it was something I will never forget. I used contrast with my letter. I showed movement in the way the water is collapsing onto the sand. I like the blending of the ocean and the colors of the beach, and how everything matches. I don't like how the N is bleeding onto the sand.

Cynthia

During Covid-19 my mom started planting lots of flowers. Me and my brother would play outside and have lots of fun. The principles of design I used were repetition and pattern, rhythm, and emphasis. I like the color of my tile, how it is all purple, but the C stands out. If I made it again I would paint the white spots.

Caspian

Going to Hawaii, and seeing the rivers there inspired me to make this tile. If I changed anything, it would be the colors. I like how the river looks.

Maximilian

I like the ocean and the beach, and the sun is usually present with the ocean. The principles of design I used are contrast and rhythm. I like how the M blends in. I would make the sun even brighter if I made it again.

Torsten

My inspiration came from my love of swimming in the ocean waves, and sitting in the sand.

Ellie

I was inspired by nature. I wrapped a vine around my letter and put leaves on it too, I used unity, because everything works together. The vine also has movement. I love how my tile shows my passion and how it is calming. If I could change anything I would add more nature to it.

Zachery

I was inspired by nature and all the living things outside. I used emphasis, balance, proportion, and rhythm. I like how the main parts like the tree, sun, and 'Z' stand out from the background. If I could do anything different I would make it neater.

Naaho

I play a lot of soccer outside normally. I felt that this would be a good subject for my tile. I used balance because when I put the sun on one side, I felt it would be nice if I put another beyond extraordinary sun on the other side of the painting. I love my bright green grass and my black and white soccer ball, because it resembles my lifestyle,, and constant work. If I could paint on the back I would put a moon in each corner, make the background dark and pretend it was night.

Sean

Walking through the wild. Souring through the cityscapes - California.

In making my tile I was inspired by the cityscape of San Francisco and the exhilarating feeling of the city. Inevitably I decided to highlight a core value and place of the city. In the middle of a sunset is the Golden Gate Bridge, a place that brings me a feeling of awe when I go to it. I used a variety of colors that I would make more vivid if I made the project again.

Fini

I was inspired by the ocean in Hawaii, because I love going there and surfing and being in the ocean. The principles of design I used were color, texture, and emphasis. I like the different shades of blue right next to each other, and how the clouds, sun, and the surfboard pop out. If I could change anything I would add texture to my first inital.

Madyn

I was inspired by the problems of deforestation. The tree has less emphasis to show how humans are getting rid of forests and replacing trees with housing. I think the way I colored the sky with a small amount of glaze is successful.

Violet

I used the Golden Gate Bridge because it shows the environment. The principles of design I used were contrast, emphasis, and balance. I like my tile for the colors and shapes I used. If I changed anything I would make my initials stand out more.

Brie

I drew my tile to represent happiness. In California, the sun is always shining. The sun makes people happy and enlightened. There are many beaches in California and the sunglasses represent those as well as the heat. My tile might not look like the sun, but it has the energy and enlightening power of the sun!

Matthew

Every year I travel to the 1000 islands in Canada. I love fishing, and my brother and I plan to go further next time. The colorful background represents the Canadian sunrise, but also reminds me of what the skies looked like when the fires raged last year.I like how the tile represents calmness and reminds us all that sometimes it's best to relax and stay calm. If I changed anything I would play around with the textures and details.

Isabella

I was inspired by my trip to Montana in winter and summer. I used contrast, emphasis and balance. I like the colors, but would change the skis if I made my tile again.

Conner

The Earth would be a better place without littering and this inspired me to make my tile. I used design principles like variety in the colors I chose, and the sun is emphasized. If I changed anything it would be the texture.

Wilkes

I was inspired by wildlife. I used variety in my design. I like the differences between all the parts. Making it again I would change the theme.

Vivi

There's a summer camp that I love, and you spend one day of it camping in a redwood forest. When you wake up you see huge beautiful redwoods. In my design I used balance. I would add more trees to the background if I made it again, but I like how the trees turned out.

Ella

I chose a beach because I love summer and my brothers love to surf. I used contrast with different colors and I showed movement in the waves and bird. I also used a variety of shapes. I like the bright colors and how some things pop out. If I could change anything I would make it cleaner.

Charlotte

I was inspired by the variety in California. You can see palm trees, a river, and the sun, which are all parts of what makes California Beautiful. I used Unity to bring everything together and I love how many different ways I could incorporate California into my life. I might improve the palm trees if I changed anything.

Sully

I knew I had to draw the beach because every summer my sister and I go into the waves, and also because I play baseball with my dad. If I could do anything different i would add more texture.

Sophie

My tile represents how there are many peaceful places in California. For example, you could be near water creeks or rivers. Or, you could be under a tree reading on soft grass. My project has many natural colors to symbolize nature in California. I used symmetry with the rivers flowing in the corners. Lastly, I made the rivers alike but different, showing how we are all unique but can come together to make one big picture.

When I made my tile I was trying to recreate a sunset setting with the E as the sun.
