Module Outline: This module is mainly about death itself (in contrast with PHI125, which is mainly about killing). We are all going to die. This is one of the most important features of the human condition, but it raises many questions. What exactly is death? What happens to us when we die? Could there be some sort of afterlife? Can the dead be harmed or benefited, or does death make us safe from further harm? What is it about death that we dislike so much? Or could it be that death is not actually bad at all, and our loathing of it is based on an illusion? Would it be better if we didn’t die? The course will clarify these questions and attempt to answer them. Readings will be taken from both historical and contemporary sources.
