Chapter 4: The Frat Party
Tommy Santos
I sigh, what else am I supposed to do on a Sunday night? Especially considering we don’t have classes tomorrow. I toss around a little Macintosh stress thing in the air and catch it. I mean, I can definitely work on some coding project; I don’t know what I’ll do but I honestly think I can just remake another old project of mine. I stare at the stuff in my room, you know just looking at the poster and figurines which I bought throughout the years. At least now I can get away with getting some Touhou stuff without awkwardly explaining to my parents what I’m buying. Just as I do so, I see Flann; my best friend walks in.
“Yo Tommy! How are you?”
“I’m doing well Flann! Just a little bored with what I can do today, considering we have tomorrow off.”
“Ah yeah, I get that feeling; you know I have something you can probably go to.”
“Oh?” I ask curiously, “What is it, Flann?”
I sit up on the bed as he’s about to explain.
“Well you know Will right?”
“I think I do”
“Ah, sounds good! He rented an airbnb, and is going to host a party.”
“Wait, isn’t it going to be a frat party?” I tell, with a hint of nervousness in my voice.
“Yeah, it is.”
“Oh, well I don’t… I mean I heard the reputation of those parties.”
“Aw, don’t worry Tommy. You know I think it’ll be nice, it wouldn’t be that dangerous.”
I quickly ponder about what to do, well, I think; it’s just nice to try it out. You know, I get to say I went to one, and if I don’t like it, I don’t have to go ever again.
“You know Flann, I’ll go.”
“Sounds good! You know, you can invite Bex if you want.”
“Uh… yeah, sounds good.” I say, feeling as I turn red like strawberries.
“Well then Tommy, I’ll see you then!”
“See ya man!” I reply, as we dap each other.
Once I see Flann leave the room, I pop a text message towards Bex.
“Yo Bex.”
I wait a bit, but then I notice she texts back; “Yeah hon? What is it?”
“Just a party invite, Flann told me about it.”
“Ah! Is it that one thing Will is hosting?”
“Uh… yeah? I think it is.”
“Woah nice!” I see Bex follow up on, “I heard about those parties, but it’ll be my first time actually going to me.”
“Yeah, me too. So see you at 5 then?”
“Promise! See ya then Tommy!” Bex replies, adding an emoticon to her message.
Well 5 o’clock it is, it’s like an hour and half from now so I have some time to kill, I could just work on some coding project. I head over to my personal computer and start to code. You know, coding is a really good way for me to pass the time; you just keep going and you continue until either you hit a roadblock in your code or just feel satisfied. This time however, it’s not until I hear the ping from my phone, and I read the message.
“Hey Tommy! On my way to the apartment!”
It’s Bex! I stop and save the project, and begin to prepare my stuff. I take a look at a mirror, wondering if I should change from this Adeline and the Bones shirt. Eh, it’s just a party by college students; not church, it'll work. I head to the living room and wait for Bex until I hear the doorbell ring.
“Yo, Mr. Santos?” She says, with some sunglasses acting cool.
“You’ll be correct, Ms. Pop.” I also say seriously before we start laughing
“So, you’re ready?”
“Yeah! Let’s go!” Bex enthusiastically says as I head out of the apartment.
We quickly head over to the party, just before the sun sets and it becomes night. I mean I wonder how this party could be, I heard some horror stories from both the news; i.e. some videos my family sends about the dangers of spiked drinks, and other people in the college. I mean, how bad can this party really be? As we find parking, and enter the building I feel confident. I mean I feel like this event will be just fi-
“♪It's so hard not to stare, At that honky tonk badonkadonk Keepin' perfect rhythm, make ya wanna swing along♪”
Oh… I mean I didn’t come up with the playlist… We walk around, greeting some people we actually know. After a bit we get settled
“Ooo! Cup Pong! Count me in!” I turn to hear Bex enthusiastically exclaim.
I walk up next to her, and observe the game from there. I mean my alcohol tolerance, or really my aiming skills suck so I’m better off just watching the game from afar. I mean Bex’s skills are pretty good, even if she loses or wins it won’t be that bad. Well, I should probably go on my phone, find some fruit punch and just relax for now. I quickly find the punch bowl and pour some into a Solo cup. I find a place to sit and now I just go on my phone for a bit.
A little bit more than a few hours laters
Oh man… the sun has set. I mean this party was alright, I had fun at the end of the day, but nothing beats a good ol’ Santos family party. I’ve played card games with Bex and some other people, it was nice. But now as I see the party is starting to wind down, I better go check up on Bex. And… she’s asleep, she’s probably going to need some ibuprofen in the morning. I try to shake her to wake her up.
“Uh, Bex?” I ask.
“H-Huh? Oh hi…” She replies, sounding a bit tired.
“Well, uh it’s time to go.”
“Ahh… S-sounds good…” I hear her say in a slurred manner.
Well yeah, she might need a hand to get home, so I help her up by her shoulder and walk her over to my car. Luckily, I don’t think the drinks were tampered with; so Bex would be fine. Though while we’re in the car I ask for something.
“Uh, Becky? May I have your ID?”
“Y-Yeah…” She replies, giving it to me before she promptly falls asleep again.
I knew it’ll happen, I mean the car ride is a little long; so I bet Bex would succumb to sleeping again. Plus it’ll look way too suspicious looking like I “stole” from her wallet. Well, I should just turn on my car stereo and listen to my playlist.
“♪Give it to me, we are all on drugs, yeah. Never gettin' enough, never gettin' enough♪”
Heh… kinda fitting I guess. Can’t get enough of Make Believe by Weezer, I mean it’s pretty nice even if people back then, and still now I guess, think it’s bad. I mean it has some classics that Bex and I bump into our playlist, it’s nice. I mean even “We Are All On Drugs” is a bit hated by some, it’s still fire in my heart. Anyway, enough about some song; I have to get Bex back to the dorm. It’s a nice little journey back home, I mean, to be honest, I don’t think there should be that much traffic on a normal Sunday at 10 pm. It’s not that far, it’s down a little more south in the part of San Francisco that’s closer to Daly City. Luckily it wasn’t in the East Bay, Bay Bridge traffic is usually just a constant.
I drive into the parking garage and park in my dedicated spot. I think this is where I have to carry Bex in, she’s essentially out for the night. I lean Bex on my shoulder and walk over to the garage, pressing the second button to head to her dorm room. My heart beats a little… I mean I’m a bit nervous with anyone who might be out in the halls, but luckily I think it would be fine; it’s like 10 pm so I think most people are either out and about or just in their rooms. I quickly walk over to room 245 and use her ID to unlock the door. At this point, I princess carry her over to her bed; though there is one last thing I should do for Becky before I leave. I write her a quick note, just saying that I brought her home safely; considering my conscience is saying waking up in a bed when your last memory was out and about would probably raise suspicion. On her nightstand, I place the note and an ibuprofen pill, before quickly holding her hand.
“I love you, Bex…” I reply before disappearing into the dead of night.
