Imagine this, you're at the Jungle Game vs St. Ignatius. There are forty-four seconds left in the second half. With three seconds left, up one against SI, no one is yelling as loud as possible, to distract the straight shooter on St. Ignatius. He drills the three, Serra loses, and it's because no one was cheering their fellow Padres on. What would you do? Would you sit in silence or would you join the crowd in their applauding screams of joy? What hopefully everybody would do is applaud with great gratitude and support for their fellow Padres. An unwritten rule at Serra that everybody knows, but no one talks about is, "If you attend a sporting event you must cheer for the Padres because if you don’t, they might lose."
Name a time when you were told at Serra to cheer for a game. Pretty hard right? It’s difficult to think of because you’ve probably never been told that. This has not been written as an official rule in the school handbook, for example, as a rule we have to follow, but we hold ourselves to it anyway. Supporting each other is something we just do. It’s muscle memory. We do it without a doubt in mind, for ourselves, as Padres. I always see the act of support being performed. I have seen support in various different forms at Serra. Even if it’s as subtle as a simple compliment or some encouraging words, I still have seen and experienced the feeling of support with great consideration and empathy. So I say again, an unwritten rule at Serra that everyone knows, but no one talks about, is you must cheer at Padre football, baseball, and basketball games because if you don't, they might lose.
