WALK-LINE

Intent / Question -

The most notable change that happened in Moti Daman beach is the construction of a promenade where the complex landscape and dynamic nature of the existing environment has been completely ignored. The area near the small creek and the fort  have created a whole ecology with different vegetation, micro-environment and the behavior leading to different sound, smell and a temperature pattern and it creates the most pleasing experience. All the construction happening here is controlling the environment instead of including it and creates a static experience which discourages people from visiting the place. At the time of high - tide, nature overpowers construction and destruction happens.

In response to that, what can be done to restore the plantation and the atmosphere? How can a space be designed to merge the landscape and conditions into it by constructing without harming existing ecology? What can be done to make the place more interactive, curious and playful in contrast to the experience of the existing promenade?

Site Of Intervention

The area near the fort wall and the river ( at the backside of the fort ) has various temperature patterns and a calm atmosphere which might attract people. As the intention of the whole coastal project is to attract tourists and locals, this space creates curiosity to see what comes next after the end of the promenade.

Site Plan and Analysis -

There is a creek formed which is activated or deactivated seasonally, in monsoons, the tidal actions are generally high and normal otherwise.  Then, the site and the landscape has clearly notable space with planted and non-planted areas, where the mangrove were removed for construction, so that loop of non-planted space was used as an intervention site, so that existing ecology won' t be disturbed.

Program for the Design -

In response to the intent, a design to restore the vegetation and the whole ecology and make it as an element of design. To make the space more interactive, small programmed spaces connected through a boardwalk which make it non-uniform and playful.

Conceptual design Strategies -

All the pocket space will be connected through a lybrinth of eco-park creating curiosity, which will also destroy the uniform nature created by the promenade.

Pocket space with variety of programs  and meandering space,

Bamboo structures with minimal footprint

A floating element which will take people from one edge to other and create a sense of floating when the creek is active, A bridge connecting both of the edge when the creek is inactive

The design process started with the idea of eco-park, where the movement will not be monotonic. Then the idea of floating pavilions to emerge the landscape into landscape. Through a process, we designed a looped boardwalk, with multiple possibilities of movement throughout the space with different functions.

Design Plans -

The spaces are created through the mangrove where after entering the space, people can inhabit the nature by walking in between mangroves, there are many sitting and relaxing spaces aligning to the walkway, first space after entering will be gathering space, the a small museum, an eatery leading to viewing points, also, there will be a floating pavilion from where people can experience whole landscape.

Design Sections and Details -

The whole structure will be made up of bamboo elevated on 2.5 m of height from the ground so that the existing ecology won't het harmed and create a minimum footprint. There are spaces in between walkway which merge into the landscape . The floating pavilion will have the mechanism of barrels stacked into framed wood structure, so when the creek has low-tide, the space will be still working or else float because of it when it's high. There are spaces with open, semi open and closed roof, for respective programs.

Details and views -

Overall, the design is to create a playful nature where people can have a nice time between trees and can experience the pleasing atmosphere of the site. It also could act as an extension for the promenade as its endpoint.
