A Pause

QUESTION

Tatawadi and Sarigam neighbourhoods show two contrasting atmospheres. Tatawadi has dense vegetative cover and wetland parks whereas Sarigam shows presence of heavy industrial pollutants and dust laden landscapes. The water plants found in wetlands of Tatawadi show high potential for usage in wastewater treatment as it removes polluting compounds and heavy metals. In Sarigam, the atmosphere affects the birds, animals and also the people including the produce sold by the street vendors. 

How can these properties of wetland along with other active systems be used to create a co-habitable spaces for vendors, workers, birds and animals to provide them with a pause from this polluted industrial landscape?

INTENT

Creating multiple habitable environments with different experiences by interspersing the built with the qualities of wetland and rethinking the boundary walls.

 PROGRAMME 

Recreational spaces (Resting, Eating, and reading space) for the workers to provide a break from their mundane routine which intersperse into the industry compounds.. A better alternative for the existing Market space in a habitable atmosphere and surroundings. A passive industrial discharge treatment system includes sediment ponds and reed beds from which the treated water is directed to a Wetland park.

Rethinking thresholds: Industries in Sarigam have high compound walls which create a stark boundary between inside and outside. These compound walls act as a line outside of which the industries dump their waste which is then consumed by cows. It is as if the industries do not consider what lies outside the walls. This project also attempts to blur these boundaries by creating new thresholds. Recreational spaces for workers are spread throughout the area and are embedded into the compound walls.
