you will need a tablet, phone, device, or camera to take photos
if you do not have any device to take photos with you can change this into a drawing assignment; instead of completing 3 photos, do 3 sketches that show different shading and represent the changing light (this can also be done as an extension of this challenge too)*
*Fun Fact 1: one of photography’s original purposes, in the 1500’s - 1800’s, was solely for the use as a drawing tool. Using the Camera Obscura, the landscape would be projected onto paper at a smaller scale and then traced.
Fun Fact 2: Photography was first used to record images around the 1500’s, however, the use of a Camera Obscura dates back to ancient Egypt, China, and Greece, as far back as 500 BCE, where it was most likely used for ceremonial purposes.
To study the way light affects a photograph (in fact light is the most important part of photography) take 3 photos of the same exact subject, object, landscape, or area at 3 different times during the day. To make it the most effective, take one photo in the early morning, one in the middle of the day, and one as the sun is going down or near night time - the weather will change the light too. The light will change in each photo and you will see how important lighting is.
-You do not need to edit or add a filter to your photos.
-Do not worry if this is not completed all on the same day, it can stretch out over several days, it is the time of day that is important.
- Try to stand in the same spot and frame your photograph the same way.
Notice the light is even, meaning there are no shadows or really bright spots. Overcast (cloudy) days are the best days for portrait photography because there are no harsh shadows.
Notice the shadow from the fence and the way the light reflects off of the lantern. Because it is sunny and near noon there are a lot of shadows. The sun also makes the flowers appear much brighter.
Notice that there are still shadows (caused by nearby trees), but the fence shadow is no longer there, which takes away that striped pattern. The flowers now appear almost grey in some areas, and there is less contrast on the latern.
Fun Fact 3: The Camera Obscura was the only way to record images at first, but the images had to be drawn by hand. The first real photograph that was taken (image was created by the camera not by hand) was by Nicephore Niepce, a French inventor. The photograph was taken in 1826 of rooftops, it took 8 hours to expose.
