Supplies: things found in nature (please don't destroy the natural environment; instead move things that don't have to be picked to create an arrangement), a camera (phone/ tablet) - this challenge can still be done if you don't have the ability to photograph it, just think about the next person walking by that may enjoy it.
Challenge: Create an image that is abstract, simple, or something recognizable, by arranging things found in nature. Sometimes just finding things that are alike in colour (such as the leaves in the example to the left - By Andy Goldsworthy) and arranging them into a shape is enough to make people rethink the world around them. This type of "nature art" is also known as "ephemeral art" it is art that is not made to last forever, eventualy, people, wind, rain, decay will alter what you first created- the photograph is the only way to capture it forever.
Below are some ideas for materials to use and ways to arrange them.
Arranging rocks in a pattern. Think about similar sizes or why you may choose to use larger or smaller rocks.
Drawing in the sand with a stick is something we all have done as a small child, now try it with more consideration regarding patterns and shapes, also think bigger!
Tim Pughs is another artist that uses leaves. The interaction with the tree base makes it more interesting.
This is another one by Andy Goldsworth. The colour choice is the most important part of this one, simply piling the leaves makes the tree look like it's glowing.
Consider the whole space you have to use, are you doing this in your backyard or a small place in the forrest? How does that chage the patterns and shapes you create?
A more simle approach is taking petals and adding them to a plant that doesn't have them, creating a new interaction between two plants.
Piling or shaping piles of sticks is another effective way to alter the space around you.
You can also create shapes or small objects and place them into a tree or bush, really changing the way someone might look at the environment and notice something new.
Please remember when going outside to be mindful of social distancing and have permission to go to a location.
If you are able to photograph your art, please email a photo to me at abradley@sd61.bc.ca and post to social media @lansdowneflyers #andygoldsworthy
