Dromornithidae is a group of large Australian flightless birds. This group lived during the Oligocene to the Pleistocene Epochs and went extinct 40,000 years ago. They were most likely herbivorous. Even though they look like ostriches, the Dromornithidae are related to fowl. They are also known as the mihirungs, thunder birds, giant emus, giant runners, and demon ducks. Scientists now better understand how this animal might have gone extinct.
Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan, a paleobiologist, and her team took samples from 20 primary leg bones of Dromornis stirtoni. Dromornis stirtoni is in the family Dromornithidae Which includes 13 femora, 5 tibiotarsi, and 2 tarsometatarsi from different growth stages. They study the thinly cut samples under the microscope for the presence or absence of growth marks in the bone. The growth marks give the growth rates of Dromornis stirtoni.
The team found out it takes Dromornis stirtoni 15 years or more to be fully grown. This growth rate was different from other species of the same family. Genyornis newtoni is an earlier species of Dromornithidae and is around 2 meters tall. Compared to Dromornis stirtoni, Genyornis newtoni growth rate is faster. Genyornis newtoni takes 1 or 2 years to grow to full size.
Species of Dromornithidae have different growth rates that are likely caused by the adaptation to the changing climate and environmental changes in Australia over millions of years. Species of Dromornithidae that grow slowly are more likely to go extinct. Both Dromornis stirtoni and Genyornis newtoni primary cause of extinction were they wouldn't be able to adapt quicker growth rate to the emergence of humans in Australia.
