Asian Heritage and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
What is Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month?
Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is a month where we celebrate the importance of Asian and Pacific Islanders and their contributions to history. Some ways we celebrate Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month include learning about how Asians and Pacific Islanders contributed to U.S. history. Reading books about the historical contributions made by Asians and Pacific Islanders and doing research about the topic are two other ways to honor Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
Iris Chang (March 28, 1968-November 9, 2004):
American journalist
Author of historical books
Political activist
Asian-American
Daughter of two university professors
She is the author of an influential book. It is her most well known book of that time period. This book influenced the whole world because it is based on a true story in China. When WWII started, Japan invaded China and at that time the capital was not Beijing, it was called Nanjing. Japanese covered up the whole thing because Japan wanted to do three thing in China:
-Burn all
-Kill all
-Destroy all
When Iris Chang went to the library for information, there was none of it. During that period, she tried her best to find out everything that happened in China, and later she published the book. Her actions informed everyone how cruel and immoral some Japanese were at that time, and how sad the Chinese people were. She is not the only one who addressed this, but she is someone Chinese people should remember in their hearts.
