Arab Heritage Month
During the month of April, Arabs across the country of America celebrate their cultural heritage which includes: food, art, music and dance. It all started in the 1990’s, when Arab Heritage Month was sporadically celebrated in school districts in several states across America. It wasn't until 2017 that a national movement sparked up to celebrate Arab Heritage Month. April 30th is when congresswoman, Debbie Dingell, issued a congressional resolution proclaiming an Arab Heritage Month in April. It was introduced in the House then passed on to the House Committee on oversight and reform. April 1st, 2021 was the day that an agreement was made that the U.S. Department of State proclaimed an Arab Heritage Month be celebrated during the month of April. Through several social media networks, the U.S. stated “Americans of Arab Heritage are very much a part of the fabric of this nation and Arab Americans have contributed in every field in every field of profession.”.
The recognition of April as Arab Heritage Month was greatly influenced by independent advocate efforts most notably by Pierre Subeh, a Middle Eastern-American business expert and author, who orchestrated a self funded campaign with over 250 billboards across the country asking the country for an Arab Heritage Month. This campaign ended up succeeding when President Joe Biden finally proclaimed the month of April as the official month for Arab History month.
