Do you want to enhance your ELA skills, and boost your confidence? This is the perfect place for you!
: ΜΜβ The debate team gives students a chance to enhance their skills in reading and writing through debate and public speaking activities! Students that are on the debate team can gain confidence, improve their ELA test scores, and feel comfortable participating in class. But the best part about this is we get to represent John J. Pershing and go compete against other schools in live debates! For the debate team, there are meetings that start in the middle of October, but if students are interested in joining they can always go to Mr. Herr in Room 311 to request a permission slip!
The Pershing Debate Team had their first "live in-person" tournament since February of 2020 on Saturday, in Queens, and was the first time any debater competed in person. The debate team did an amazing job, with hard work and preparation in the lead up to the tournament. A special shout out to the pairing of Nudrath Sawhat and Anita Zhu, both from 702, for winning the ENTIRE tournament out of over 180 different pairings. Nudrath was ranked #2 and Anita was ranked #8 individually out of 366 total competitors. The pairing of Ethan Chen and Ryan Chen both from 701 were also recognized as a ranked team during the tournament. A special shoutout goes to Chuheng Wen from 804 for winning the schools sportsmanship award at the tournament. Go Pershing!
Interested in exploring other cultures? Join the Cultural Celebration Club!
: ΜΜβ The cultural celebration club is a way for students to celebrate different cultures in the school, and have a better Pershing experience! Members of the club help prepare and set up for different events, like for hispanic heritage month, students volunteered to help decorate the stage, put up posters, find posters, and print posters about the specific cultural event, then to organize the event the day it happened. Members are setting up events being held, and some are also able to go on trips. To join, you can go to 310, and ask Ms. Dillon for permission slips!
Are you interested in crafts, drawing, and painting? Consider the Art Club!
: ΜΜβ The art club have been creating self-portraits in art. The student made portraits of their "alter ego" and learned how to draw facial proportions. Learning to draw is advantageous in all other subjects like ELA, social studies, math, and other subjects can all benefit from creativity. The installations for the art exhibits that are taking place on December 15 will be made by elective students. Families are welcome to attend. We undertake a number of exercises to explore learning new approaches in art mathematics. We create a final product after discovering and honing these abilities. For mutual improvement, we also provide feedback on one another's work. The elective class is full, so you are unable to enroll; however, a club meeting will take place in January, the art club is mostly about painting, and etc.
Do you enjoy playing basketball? There's basketball teams for both girls and boys! Why not consider joining?
: ΜΜβ "The boys basketball team is a team that participates in the NSPL, a league where students get to play against other schools. The team's primary goal is to help the boys develop their basketball talents. The boys are to learn responsibility, and perseverance as the second objective. In general, the club wish it can help guarantee that everyone is punctual, civil, responsible, and achieves high academic standards. In addition to encouraging kids to perform well in school, it also serves to improve basketball skills and competition. A basketball season consists of 10 games, and if the team win half of them, they get to proceed to the playoffs. If the team went on a winning streak, they can also go to the all-star game in Queens. The team could possibly earn a championship, and a trophy if they win the postseason. The team devote one-third of each practice session to honoring their particular abilities, including dribbling, passing, playing defense, and shooting. They would spend another third of the time practicing as a team, going through plays, and different strategies to help us win the game, and the remaining time would be spent competing against one another in games like 5 on 5. The basketball team will held tryouts for the fall team, and will hold them once more for the spring team in March or April, for those students who would like to participate, as well as getting the permission slip sign." Coach Troisi and Coach Diaz
Are you interested in playing soccer and competing against other schools? This is the suited team for you!
: ΜΜβ "The soccer club is to help the students develop soccer skills. A lot of the team is 8th graders, so the objective is to make them better at soccer, work together, and make each other better players. Being better at soccer is a good opportunity in high school since students can get a chance to be on a team there if they're a good soccer player, for example, some students last year were able to get recruited to certain high schools because of their soccer skills. If the student is a good soccer player, they are able to end up getting a scholarship for college to play soccer, and is able to can get into a good school for free. Students that is on the team, are able to go to Brooklyn bridge park which is a really good feild. Students get a really cool view of Manhattan, and can get to practice after school to improve soccer skills, and work collaboratively. The team is set as of now, but in the spring thereβll be another team. If any students are interested in joining will be sent out an information session to try out!" Coach Colgan and Coach Brennan
The Fall 2022 Soccer Season started in October. Students were asked to tryout and 20 players made the team. Each week students practiced their skills in order to be ready to compete against other schools on Saturdays. All games were played at Pier 5, Brooklyn Bridge Park. The team was excited to be given the opportunity to play there and take in the beautiful NYC skyline. The team worked hard each week during practice in order to defeat several teams. We practiced dribbling, passing and working together as a team in order to defeat other teams. Our last two games were the best of our season. The players really came together and were able to work as a team to have two shutout victories. The fall season has ended, and our spring season will start in March. The team is looking forward to continue to work as a team and win more games.
