Photographic portrait sculptures are a great way to capture multiple facets of your identity or personality. They differ from a photo collage in which you can incorporate other objects and associations within your art piece. For this activity, you are restricted to black and white, and photos of your face. You may choose to also incorporate existing photos of yourself.
You will pair up and conduct a photo shoot with each other.
Consider a plane backdrop and lighting.
Take multiple photos of your face from different angles, exploring expressions and camera angles.
Traditional approach:
Print multiple copies of these out from the library, in greyscale. Now you can cut your face up and explore layout compositions.
You can photograph your final results, or scan them. By exploring tactile approaches, you can explore effects that are difficult to achieve digitally: crumpling paper, torn edges, folded paper, lighting effects etc. You can also explore Scanography.
Consider shape language, pattern making, and principles such as repetition, scale and space.
Digital approach [explore this in your own time]:
In Photoshop, start cutting your images up using tools such as the Lasso selection tool (L), and the Marquee tool (M).
Each time you make a selection on your original layer, click CTRL+J (Cmd +J on Mac) to duplicate your selection to a new layer. It is essential you do not cut your selection out from the original image.
This activity is to get you out of your comfort zone, exploring fun ways to represent yourself. The final product may end up as a core element of your personal brand for project one, or the process may lead you to other aesthetics.
Scanography is a process utilising a flat bed scanner to capture high resolution photography. By placing 3D objects and items on the scanner, removing the lid, and turning the lights out, you can achieve some unique photographs as the scanner captures depth.
*** DO NOT LOOK AT THE LIGHT.
Using a flat bed scanner, drag your images across the bed while scanning. The results are some exciting and unexpected manipulations. Experiment on speed, rotation and depth.
You can use this effect on typography aswell for some fun results.
