"The understanding that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be seen, heard, or otherwise sensed."
Charlie and her Psychiatrist have a special relationship, one that transcends normal doctor-patient agreements. Looking forward to their last session together, Dr. Durden can’t wait to release Charlie from her care after the progress she has made since the sudden death of her husband, Andy. As their last session unfolds, Dr Durden starts to doubt Charlie’s stability, sending both of them down a path that forces inner turmoil to the surface.
This film explores the way that grief impacts the way we perceive reality. After dealing with the loss of my beloved childhood pet and Grandfather, I have used my own loss to explore the way that it impacts the way we understand and interact with the world around us. Death and bereavement is an inevitable part of life and discrimminates against no one. Whilst these losses have been painful and drenched in tears, I have learnt that it is through this loss that we are able to reflect upon what it means to be alive. Life is short and fleeting, so it is important to for us to accept our past so that we can continue to evolve. Self forgiveness is a difficult and uncomfortable experience, however it is an essential part of personal growth. Both Charlie and Mia represent the importance of self forgiveness, and it is through their journey that we are able to see what happens when we neglect to give ourselves the kindness we so readily give to those around us. I have taken inspiration from films such as Beautiful Boy, Fight Club and The Matrix as they all explore different approaches to the idea of reality. Adopting similar techniques has enabled us to create a dynamic and impactful viewing experience for our audience. I am incredibly proud of Object Permanence, and hope that everyone that views it can reflect upon their own grief with a new perspective.
