The second half this trimester was dedicated towards developing skills required to successfully run a studio session from start to finish. This involves researching recording techniques to best capture the performative style and intention of the artist, editing and mixing the recorded material with further reference to the genre, and lastly mastering the final product. Mastering is like adding the final layer of lacquer onto a fine wooden furniture piece. Most importantly it enables the recording to be competitively loud! This holistic approach to the engineering process highlights the subtle differences in each step and enables further development of critical listening skills.
The aim of this project was to critically listen to a completed aduio recording and replicate what you can hear. This involves extensive research into the process of the artist and a dedicated replication throughout. This process is equivalent to learning your favourite songs when you pick up an instrument, by mimicing the process you always have a reference point to learn from. Nathan Marchant recorded, mixed and mastered all the instruments for this sound a like using a mix of analog hardware and "in-the-box" mixing techniques.

I'm a 25 year old Music Producer/ Engineer from Perth, I've been Producing Hip Hop beats for over 5 years and work with some local acts around Perth. I'm in my 3rd trimester at SAE and have learnt a lot and gained a lot of new skills and have found a new love of Mixing and Mastering. I don't come from a music background and I feel like this is a bit of a disadvantage when it comes to being in the Industry. But being at SAE has taught me to embrace this and know my strengths and also to embrace the challenge.
In the future I hope to open my own studio/ record label, for now I'm loving the challenge of working with different artists and different genres of music.
