Hi! I'm Alyssa and this is my ANC220 Yagan Project: "A World Within Another"
A 4 minute animation combining 2D art, Special Effects and Audio tracks to form an immersive and unique experience ~
What was the meaning behind this?
The message I want to convey to the audience is a sense of peace and awe that creativity gives you. Also, to appreciate the beautiful world that God created, and to encourage people to enjoy the moment. There is beauty in everything if you look closely, and what may seem simple at first is usually a gift in disguise.
It is a known concept that “Less than 5% of the world’s oceans are discovered”. We know more about space than we do about our own planet’s oceans. There are still many more wondrous and interesting things to discover. I imagine our creativity. I like that too.
Who was this made for?
To put it simply, everyone! Ahahaha, but that is also very broad, so while I do wish everyone could get something worthwhile from it, I did consider a specific audience. This project can be enjoyed by all ages, though largely targets teens, adults and elderly, and people who enjoy pretty effects and simple, cute and beautiful 2D aesthetics.

However, I especially aimed for people who are stressed - I know how draining things can be sometimes, and by making this, I was hoping anyone who felt that way who saw it would be encouraged - or at least - a refreshed and energised, even if only for a little. It's very easy to forget there are beautiful and wonderful things in the world when you are tired, anxious or under pressure, so I hope that this may brighten their life, if only a little.
I also targeted people that like to find meaning in art. A World Within Another was created to not only convey the feelings and meaning I mentioned before, but also for the audience to discover their own meaning and experience. Whether it helps them realise something they have been thinking about for a while, or is simply a pretty and calming piece of art, that is up to the viewing, and each conclusion is a valuable one.
I hope that whatever experience you have is something precious to you.
I really wanted to experiment with After Effects and 2D software this Tri, since I'm also interested in those area, but so far have only been working on 3D projects. That’s fine too (I like to have a broad understanding of how to do basics of everything), but I was really excited to work with 2D software and special effects this Tri! I am interested in combining VFX (Visual Effects), 2D and 3D elements and seeing the result, since it always looks so unique!
The 1st 3 weeks for me began with Planning and Pre-Production efforts. I originally started with the idea of animating a character who would swim in the ocean scene and interact with the sea creatures. I wanted whales to be swim by as well and their calls to be heard. They would be the main creatures present aside from the character. However, during the last few days of submission I made a firm creative decision not to include the character. His movements were good and he added interest, but by taking him out of the piece, the visuals and meaning became that much better! And so, he is present during the screen tests, but not in the final production. I believe it was the right decision. He didn't look as good as I intended through puppeting. If I was to do this project again, I would have animated him separately in the traditional way, then imported into the scene.
I completed Pre-Production quite early, and started immediately on Production. I knew what I wanted to create, what to convey and mostly how I would do so, so I got right into it!
The next 11 weeks was spent working on the project and completing written tasks that were assigned throughout the course. I admit, I didn't focus half as much on the written side this Trimester. Although I was sad at this, I think my instructors were rejoicing I had found a good balance ahahaha.
The producing part was extremely interesting and very fun! I had many moments where I sat back and realised how far I'd come, because I only used a few tutorial tips here and there to learn effective tricks. Everything this Tri was made from my effort, experimentation and imagination! What a satisfying feeling!
Audio student Mitchell Parker worked with me to produce the sounds of whales and the water ambience. They were very good! I then cut them, adjusted the volume, speed and made it sound fuller and deeper for the project. The last screen test was dedicated to testing the audio. After all this, I implemented it into the video editing software and produced the final product!
