Driven to design natural subjects and explore new brushes in Photoshop, my approach was to construct animals out of plants and flowers. Inspired by the surrealist animal paintings by Jon Ching, and some oil paint style floral designs by Lezio Lopes on Behance, I used bristle and oil brushes in Photoshop to replicate a canvas-style effect. Considering the audience of Yagan, I decided on West Australian natives, with the aim to evoke feelings of Australian pride.
This project was the first time I had used a blending brush in Photoshop. It took a lot of trial... and a lot of errors. I had to learn to be work lighter with my Wacom tablet stylus, in order to blend colours gently, I had to find time efficient solutions to catch up after permanently deleting all my work, and I had to learn to distribute my time and effort evenly over the 6 animals in stages.
Yagan Single Loop.mp4The above video is a 20 second loop sample of the 4 minute render submitted for screening. To cut down on the, sometimes over 12 hour, export time in Adobe After Effects, this 20 seconds of motion was looped with the particle effect (dust), in the background, spanning the entire 4 minutes.
I opted for darker backgrounds for my print posters. With the tower's screen, we had limitations in colour and a dark green like I used here would appear as black. For the posters however I thought it made the colours of the animals pop more.
The idea came to me as soon as I started using blending brushes that had a similar texture. It was a risk to pay for a print without a test print, and I added extra canvas texture to the background as the material was too smooth, when I asked to see it beforehand.
