I conducted a "This or That" survey among RRMR’s 7th to 12th-grade students. The survey featured six intriguing questions to uncover student preferences. The participants chose between Coca-Cola or Pepsi, dogs or cats, running or walking, Walmart or Target, winter or summer, and cake or pie. I followed up by interviewing one student from each grade, asking three personalized questions based on their original survey response. Here’s what the students had to say:
Mattie Borchardt - Pepsi or Coca-Cola?
Question 1: What makes Pepsi stand out to you compared to Coca-Cola?
Response 1: “I just personally think that it’s better than Coca-Cola.”
Question 2: How do you usually enjoy your Pepsi?
Response 2: “With a yummy snack.”
Question 3: Have you ever noticed a difference in the taste of Pepsi depending on where or how it’s served?
Response 3: “Yes, I like it more at a fast food place instead of like at home or bought from the store.”
Joseph Nagy - Walmart or Target?
Question 1: What keeps you coming back to Walmart?
Response 1: “I would have to say the selection of items.”
Question 2: What’s a memorable purchase or experience you’ve had at Walmart?
Response 2: “A memorable purchase there was when I first bought my Xbox.”
Question 3: Do you think Walmart reflects your personal shopping style?
Response 3: “Yes, I do!”
Keaton Weitzel - Winter or Summer?
Question 1: What’s your favorite activity or tradition during summer?
Response 1: “Probably boating.”
Question 2: How do you feel the season of summer affects overall mood or energy?
Response 2: “It makes me really happy.”
Question 3: Is there a specific memory tied to summer that makes it your favorite?
Response 3: “I just mainly like the weather being nice.”
Maryssa Walker - Running or Walking?
Question 1: What do you enjoy most about walking?
Response 1: “I like how it’s easy and you can keep your earbuds and listen to music without dropping them.”
Question 2: How do you feel after a good walk?
Response 2: “Pretty relaxed, I usually walk to help calm down after a long day.”
Question 3: Do you prefer to walk outdoors or indoors, and how does it affect your choice?
Response 3: “I prefer walking outside, I like the smell of the air.”
Question 1: What is your favorite flavor of pie and why?
Response 1: “Apple pie because my grandma makes it and it’s really good.”
Question 2: Do you associate pie with any special occasions or traditions?
Response 2: “Thanksgiving at my grandma's house.”
Question 3: Have you ever tried baking your favorite pie yourself?
Response 3: “No, I have not.”
Question 1: What do you value most in a pet and how does your choice reflect that?
Response 1: “Loyalty, it reflects my choice because all my dogs have been loyal.”
Question 2: Have you ever had a meaningful experience with a dog?
Response 2: “Yes, a long time ago I was crying and my dog came up and laid with me.”
Question 3: What traits do you admire most about dogs?
Response 3: “Again, their loyalty to their owners and how they protect them too.”
My survey not only highlights student preferences but also gives a look into their personal experiences and traditions. From enjoying Pepsi with a snack to cherishing the loyalty of a beloved pet, each student’s responses bring a different perspective to everyday choices.

World's Shortest Interview - What is your dream job?
Everyone has big goals, and for students, their dream job is usually a reflection of their passions, skills, and dreams. But what if you could get straight to the point and ask, "What is your dream job?" I asked five students from RRMR this very question to get insight of their career goals in the most direct way possible. Here's what they had to say....
"My dream job is to be a cosmetologist."
"To be a semi driver!"
"Probably to be a cop."
"An author!"
"Working in autopsy."
I think it's great to see these young students thinking about their future careers. Whether they stick with these dreams or find new ones, their goals show who they are and what interests them. No matter what path they take, their future is bright!

Local Favorites: A Place That Matters To Me
Located just west of Rockford, Iowa, the Fossil & Prairie Park Preserve offers a look into Earth's ancient past, making it an important landmark in our community. This 400-acre park is famous for its accessible Devonian-era fossils, native prairies, and historical significance.
The park was once the site of the Rockford Brick & Tile Company, which played an important role in the region's development. Today, visitors can explore the remnants of this era, including the beehive kilns used in brick production. The park's geological formations date back over 365 million years to the Devonian period, offering many marine fossils.
Growing up near Rockford, I have known the Fossil & Prairie Park since I was little. I vividly remember school field trips where we excitedly searched for fossils. To gain another perspective, I spoke with Dillon Borchardt.
Q: How did you first come across this place?
"I first came across this place in a field trip I went on in 5th grade. I also live pretty close to it.”
Q: What do you like most about it?
"I really like the kilns and all the history.”
The Fossil & Prairie Park Preserve showcases our towns history and natural beauty, offering a place for learning, recreation, and reflection.

Q: What’s your best memory from it so far?
A: "Probably making a big tournament with my travel volleyball team."
Q: How has this helped your friendships or skills?

"I will be hanging out with friends and family."
What makes any night memorable for you?
"Doing things that give me a rush."
Student Attending Prom
Why are you going to prom?

What do you think you will remember the most?
"I think I'll remember after prom the most."
Parent/Teacher
What do you remember most about your prom?
"After prom was the best."
Was it what you expected?
"It was what I was expecting."
Do you think prom still matters?
"Yes, it was fun being with my friends and having a fancy dinner at the school."
Prom is special for a lot of students because it’s something you look forward to all year, especially if you’re a junior or senior. An article by The Gator's Eye said most students remember prom as one of the best nights of high school. There’s just something exciting about dressing up, going out with friends, and making memories that you’ll probably look back on for years. Even the little things like planning your outfit or taking photos make it feel like a big moment.
I really like prom, it’s one of those events that feels different from everything else in school. It’s fun to see everyone all dressed up and just having a good time. I think prom brings people together in a way that nothing else really does. Whether you go with a date or a group of friends, it’s just nice to celebrate and enjoy the night. I’m excited for prom and everything that comes with it, and I already know it’s going to be a great memory.

Did prom live up to your expectations?
"Sort of."
Did you actually "bust it down" on the dance floor?
"Well, duh, of course!"
What was your favorite part of prom?
"Probably getting pictures taken and eating out."

The Real Impact of FFA at Rockford
When people hear "FFA", they might just think of cows, crops, or the blue corduroy jackets. But at our school, FFA is so much more than that. It’s a place where students build confidence, learn leadership skills, and find a sense of belonging. As the current FFA president, I’ve seen firsthand how FFA changes lives, mine included. I joined FFA in 9th grade because I liked agriculture. Over the years, I’ve competed in contests, planned events, and learned how to speak in front of a crowd. Being elected president taught me how to lead, listen, and work with all kinds of people. It’s not always easy, but it’s helped me grow in ways I never expected. Let's take a look at other people's perspectives.
What do you think makes FFA special at our school?
"I think what makes FFA special at our school is the involvement, kids really like participating in our meetings, fundraising events, and just spending time together as a chapter."
What are some events or projects this year that you are proud of as advisor?
"I'm really proud of our baby animal day, our middle school Ag club, and our chapter banquet."
How did FFA help you grow personally when you were younger?
"When I was younger, FFA taught me so many things, including leadership skills, personal relations, and gave me so many experiences like traveling and getting to know the kids from other communities and chapters."
What do you think makes FFA special at our school?
"All of the hands on experiences we get here at our school."
What are some events or projects you are proud of as an FFA member?
"Definitely, last year when our Ag Issues team got named as alternate to state at Districts."
How has FFA helped you grow personally?
"It has made me come out of my comfort zone!"
FFA students are involved in so much, like planning service projects, competing at districts, and helping younger students learn about agriculture. These experiences teach us responsibility, teamwork, and how to manage real challenges. You don’t have to live on a farm to belong in FFA. If you’re ready to learn, work hard, and grow, there’s a place for you here. FFA isn’t just a school activity. It’s a way to become a better version of yourself. I hope more students will see that and give it a try.

As the school year winds down, students across Rockford are ready for summer. From working summer jobs to soaking up the sun on vacation, everyone has their own way of making the most of the break. I interviewed students from grades 7 through 11 to find out what they’re most excited for!
Lilly Moen, an 11th grader, hopes to go to Florida but if not, she’ll be camping on weekends, working as much as she can, and waking up before 8 a.m. Her goals include spending more time outside, helping in the garden, reading, and not being stuck at home. Caleb LaPoint in 10th grade plans to work at The Daabin and wake up around 10 a.m. He wants to play baseball and hang out with friends, saying it depends on the day whether he’ll be inside or outside. Lilly Litterer, a 9th grader, is going to Wyoming in July, babysitting, and hopes to spend time at the lake with her family fishing and tubing. Her main goal is to be outside more than inside. Ellie Baltes in 8th grade works at a daycare and isn’t sure of her big plans yet but knows she’ll be riding dirt bikes and trying to win another motocross championship. She definitely prefers the outdoors. Hayden Lacour, our 7th grader, is excited to chill this summer, maybe race go-karts with his cousin, eat s’mores, and not get sunburned. He might go camping and plans to sleep in a little later.
This summer, Rockford students have a wide range of exciting plans, from traveling and working to spending more time outdoors and enjoying their favorite hobbies. Whether it’s babysitting, riding dirt bikes, playing baseball, or just hanging out with friends, everyone seems ready for a break and some fun in the sun.
