Emma's Education Abroad Experience

"I selected to complete the CIEE: Open Campus program because I was able to pick two different cities and go for 12 weeks instead of a full semester. Copenhagen in particular had classes that aligned with my major perfectly. I also wanted to participate in a program where I could get hands-on experience rather than being in a classroom, hence why I decided to do a Maymester a month after I came home from Europe!

Being abroad for four months this year in two separate education abroad programs was unforgettable. I was able to participate in a program in Europe where I did not know anyone going into it, and I was able to take classes there. I got to meet students from all over the U.S. that I still keep in touch with. I then did a faculty-led program where I traveled with 19 other Penn Staters. The people I met made my abroad experiences the most memorable. Whether it was in class or out. I was most surprised with how much I was capable of doing on my own.

Throughout my education abroad experience, I learned how to navigate myself around cities, and how to communicate with others who do not speak English, especially with my host mom in Paris. I learned how grateful I am and how amazing the opportunities Penn State offers us.

As a Community, Environment, and Development major, I am constantly learning about international studies and relations. Another highlight of my major is being able to work with all different types of people living in all communities. Having multiple experiences abroad emphasized what I learned about in the classes I have had at Penn State.

My best advice would be to go somewhere where there will be classes or material that you are passionate about, along with somewhere you also have an interest in. Also, challenge yourself! I lived with a host family in Paris with no prior knowledge of French. I found that there were ups and downs to this, but it was overall an amazing learning and bonding experience. Living with a host family is such a beneficial way to be most immersed into the culture!"
