"During my education abroad program, one of the most memorable experiences was a tour of Como, where I was captivated by the stunning architecture of the Basilica di San Fedele. Another highlight was a cooking class at Casnati, where we learned to make tiramisu under the guidance of a multilingual chef, Eduardo. Visiting Caffe Milani offered a deep dive into the world of coffee, where we learned about different types of beans and enjoyed freshly made espresso. However, the most impactful experience was at Cascina Baggera, a farm that supports individuals with Down Syndrome, where we witnessed the power of inclusivity in action. Finally, our tour of Milan, especially exploring its historic Castello and the awe-inspiring Duomo, rounded off the program with an appreciation for the city's rich history and culture. I have never been outside of North America and found a program that aligned with my academic plan perfectly. I have had a lifelong dream of visiting Italy as well.
The experience itself was amazing and seeing/meeting people from a plethora of different backgrounds. The most important lessons I learned during my education abroad experience revolved around the power of cultural immersion, the value of inclusivity, and the significance of adaptability. Immersing myself in a new culture, particularly through experiences like the tour of Como and the cooking class at Casnati, taught me to appreciate and respect different perspectives and traditions. At Cascina Baggera, I saw firsthand the impact of inclusivity and how meaningful it is to create environments where everyone is valued and can contribute. Additionally, navigating various situations where language barriers existed and adapting to different social norms highlighted the importance of flexibility and open-mindedness in both personal and professional contexts. These lessons have deepened my understanding of the world and will guide me in my future endeavors.
My experience abroad has provided me with a broader perspective and enhanced skills that will be invaluable in achieving my future goals and aspirations. The exposure to different cultures and practices has deepened my understanding of global dynamics, which is crucial as I pursue a career in industrial engineering with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. The lessons in adaptability, communication, and cultural awareness will help me navigate diverse work environments and collaborate effectively with international teams. Additionally, the emphasis on inclusivity and the power of community that I witnessed will inspire me to create inclusive and supportive environments in my future leadership roles. Overall, this experience has strengthened my problem-solving skills, expanded my worldview, and equipped me with the tools to succeed in a globalized world.
Based on my experience, my advice to other Penn State students considering education abroad is to embrace the opportunity with an open mind and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone. It's natural to feel apprehensive, but the rewards of personal growth, cultural immersion, and unique experiences far outweigh the initial fears. Take advantage of every moment to learn, ask questions, and engage with the local culture—it will enrich your perspective in ways you can't imagine. Don't be afraid to face challenges, whether it's a language barrier or navigating a new city; these experiences will strengthen your adaptability and resilience. Lastly, remember that you're not alone—Penn State offers a supportive network of resources and advisors who can help guide you through the process. Embrace the adventure, and you'll return with memories and skills that will positively impact your future."
