Education Abroad Program: SFS: Kenya (Summer 2025)
Major: Biology
About Miracle: Miracle is a rising senior majoring in Biology on a pre-veterinary track. In Summer 2025, she studied Giraffe Ecology and Conservation through a field-based program in Kimana and Amboseli, Kenya. Her experience combined hands-on fieldwork, classroom-based learning, and discussions with local conservationists, ecologists, and Maasai community leaders, giving her a deeper understanding of wildlife biology and the intersection of science and culture.
A highlight of the program was a week-long camping expedition in Maasai Mara, where she helped collect data on giraffe behavior and habitat use, contributing to ongoing conservation efforts. Her time abroad not only expanded her academic knowledge but also challenged her perspective, strengthened her adaptability, and deepened her commitment to community-centered environmental work.
Advice to Prospective Education Abroad Students: As a first-generation college student, I’ve had to navigate a lot on my own—so I understand how overwhelming the idea of studying abroad can feel. But stepping out of my comfort zone to study in Kenya turned out to be one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made. The experience was so much more than academics. From hands-on fieldwork and learning in a completely new environment, to bonding with classmates, engaging with local communities through traditions like beading and Adumu (Maasai welcome dance), and feeling supported by an amazing on-site staff—it exceeded all my expectations. Studying abroad gives you a perspective and growth that you truly can’t get at home. I’m excited to help other students, especially those who may feel unsure or nervous, prepare for this journey—and help them find a program that fits both their academic goals and personal growth.
