Have you ever wondered why consistent school attendance is important? Here are 3 areas that chronic absenteeism (= missing just 2 days of school a month or 18 days total per school year) can impact.
Academic Performance - Consistent attendance at the elementary level can lead to higher grades and better reading and math skills giving students a stronger foundation. Making school attendance important and establishing good habits is key to future success.
Social Development - School helps children build relationships, interact, and develop crucial social-emotional skills such as problem solving, responsibility and perseverance. Regular attendance helps kids feel more connected to their peers, their teacher and their school, improving overall wellbeing and engagement. Social skills are an important part of everyday life and school to career success.
Future Success - Early attendance patterns predict later success; good attendance in early grades is linked to higher graduation rates and better career opportunities. What we do today impacts tomorrow!
Here are 5 ways you can help your child develop good attendance habits.
Schedule vacations or long weekends around the school calendar.
Book doctor, dentist/ortho, or any medical appointments needed after school hours.
Keep a calendar or track of days your student misses.
Encourage kids that want to stay home to at least go and try to attend. Oftentimes once a child is at school they become fully engaged and are glad they did!
If your child avoids going to school or complains, try setting up a rewards chart with them and set weekly, monthly and/or even quarterly goals with them. Rewards can be things like a family game night or a family movie night. Rewards should not be a day off from school. 🙃
Elementary school absences are associated with poor outcomes in subsequent years. Establishing good attendance habits in kindergarten and elementary school ensures that children do not fall behind. Make school a priority and help your student succeed! If getting your child to school is a struggle, please do not hesitate to reach out for support or resources. I am eager to help.
