Family Time: Five Family Friendly Activities to Try This Winter
Time off from school, like winter break, is a great time to reconnect with family and friends. Spending time together talking and doing things can help strengthen family bonds and reinforce the importance of personal relationships. Spending time with others can help combat the "winter blues" and isolation that can be caused by shorter daylight hours and colder temperatures. Here are five fun ideas for your family to try this winter.
Play a family board game: Playing board games reinforces important skills like following rules, taking turns and graciously handling wins and losses.
Bake/cook something: Cooking is a great life skill and can reinforce fundamental skills like math and reading. Try having your child pick out something fun to bake ro cook together and reap the rewards.
Take a hike: Getting outside and enjoying the fresh air even in the winter can be very fun and promote a healthy lifestyle.
Read together: Whether you are reading to your child, they are reading to you, or quietly reading on their own, try setting aside some time each day during break to read. Try sitting together in a room with the fireplace on or candles glowing to help set the mood. Look for winter or holiday themed stories to read from the public library to help encourage reading.
Do a Puzzle: Pick a puzzle that challenges your child. Spend only 20-30 minutes a day working on it together. Building a puzzle together takes time, sometimes days and can help kids learn skills like time management, patience, and teamwork. Look for puzzles at thrift stores, garage sales or the library.
Bonus Idea: Have a movie night: Have your child pick a favorite or new movie to watch. Make a big deal out of it by encouraging your child to make tickets for everyone, pop popcorn, build a family room fort or camp out area with pillows and blankets for everyone to stay cozy while watching.
