The District Nurses of Pleasanton Unified School District would like to remind families of the importance of keeping students home when they are sick in order to protect the health of our school community. There has been an increase in respiratory infections in our community. Respiratory infections are illnesses caused by viruses or bacteria that affect the nose, throat, and lungs. These infections are commonly spread through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, or by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the nose or mouth.
Symptoms of respiratory infections may include:
Fever or chills
Cough
Sore throat
Runny or stuffy nose
Muscle or body aches
Headache
Fatigue
What families should do:
Please monitor your child closely for symptoms.
If your child has a fever, is feeling unwell, or has symptoms of a respiratory illness, keep them home from school.
Students and staff should remain home until they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications, symptoms are improving, and they are able to participate in normal activities.
If symptoms worsen or your child has difficulty breathing, contact your healthcare provider promptly.
Wearing a well-fitting mask for 5 days after returning to school can help reduce the spread of illness.
Vaccination against flu and COVID-19 remains one of the best ways to prevent serious illness. We also encourage regular handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home when sick.
Thank you for your continued partnership in keeping our students and staff healthy. If you have questions or concerns, please contact your healthcare provider or your school health office.
Sincerely,
District Nurses

Did you know that kindness is the most powerful and useful of all social-emotional skills? Kindness actually paves the way for all the other important social-emotional childhood skills to be more effective. In fact, performing acts of kindness actually improves the well-being of the giver more than the well-being of the receiver. February is a great month to focus on kindness in your home and help your child learn that kindness is contagious and ripples outward to everyone around them.
Here are 5 fun ways to help your family focus on Kindness.
Talk about what kindness looks like, feels like and sounds like. Help your child understand that being kind is free. Encourage your child to share about a time someone was kind to them.
Create a kindness jar and add a heart or penny every time your child does an act of kindness at home. Help your child make a list of ideas so they can choose one each day.
Have your child write a note or make a drawing for a teacher or a loved one and send or bring it to them.
At the dinner, go around the table and have each person say something they are grateful for in their lives. Feeling gratitude helps kids feel happy and act kinder to others.
Read or listen to a social story or about kindness. Here are some links to a few good ones online.
