Hello to my Substitute!  Thank you for covering for me!  This is the lesson I am teaching this week.  The italic red headings (1. - 5.) let you know what to do for each class that you will have today.  Just scroll down the page for each class, following each step as you come to it.  Then, scroll back to this section for the next class and repeat.

1. Read this to each class:

April is Autism Awareness & Autism Acceptance Month

Autism is a type of neuro-diversity.  It is a neurological and developmental condition that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn, and behave.  Someone who is on the autism spectrum may not respond the way you might think they would, and/or they may have repetitive behaviors and interests, difficulty with social interaction, or different communication skills.  They make have difficulty making eye contact or understanding social cues, while others struggle to understand sarcasm or figurative language.  They may have difficulty with non-verbal communication, such as facial expressions and body language, but everyone who has autism is different, just like people who don't have autism are different.  Take time to get to know each person and what they like.

2. Introduction: play the video below to each class (please make it full screen)

(can end at 4min 15sec)

3. Story: play the video below to each class (please make it full screen)K-2nd on the left; 3rd-6th below to the right.

(approx. 8 minutes)

4. Activity for Kindergarten, 1st grade, and 5th grade classes:  After students view the video above and listen to the story, students should read books at their table until the end of class.

IF students brought their Chromebooks, they may also:

take Accelerated Reader quizzes on the book(s) they read

AND/OR they may read ebooks on Epic

AND/OR they may work on Lexia Core.

(skip down to section 5 for end of class directions)

4. Activity for 2nd, 3rd , 4th, and 6th grade students: If they brought their Chromebooks, they need to take the AR quiz on the story.  But before they do, please click here to review the quiz with the students before they take the quiz.  After students take the AR quiz, you may allow the students:

to read books at their table

AND/OR they may read ebooks on Epic

AND/OR they may work on Lexia Core.

AND/OR who WANT to color do so (see the Simone Biles mini-posters I left)  There are NOT enough papers for all students for the entire day, though.

5. ALL CLASSES: At the end of class, have students stack the books up in the center of the table (in 1 or 2 stacks), push their chairs up, and line up on the black dots at the EXIT door.
