On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, an African-American woman, was arrested for not giving up her seat on the bus so a white man could sit down. This action began the Montgomery Bus Boycott that lasted 381 days (Dec. 5, 1955 - Dec. 20, 1956) and helped change the laws that segregated people on buses.
Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913 and passed away on October 24, 2005 at the age of 92.
This year marks the 68th anniversary of the beginning of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
Mrs. Parks was 42 when she was arrested.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., (DOB 1-15-1929) 26 & mostly 27 years old , was a prominent figure in leading the boycott.
On November 13, 1956, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the lower court's ruling that bus segregation violated the due process and equal protection clauses of the 14th Amendment, which led to the successful end of the bus boycott on December 20, 1956.
