Nov. 8-14, 2023

Saturday, November 11th is Veterans Day.  During this lesson, we'll learn what veterans are and more about this special holiday.  Watch this video first, which tells what Veterans Day is and how it began.   Veterans Day Facts For Kids or Veterans Day for Kids cartoon.

As you can see, veterans are very important people!  Do you know any veterans?  Talk with your family about it.  Many of you may have veterans in your family... your mom, dad, uncles, aunts, big brothers, big sisters, grandfathers, grandmothers, and cousins, too!  Maybe your family has friends who have served in the military.  Ms. Wall doesn't have any veterans in her family, but she has some friends that are veterans.  You can thank them for their bravery and their service on this special holiday!  :)

Next, we will read the book below that corresponds to your grade (K-3 or 4-6).  When you click on the picture of the book, a new tab will open in epic!, an online book provider.  Please note, these links will only work during regular school hours.

After you've listened to the story for your grade, click on the Scholars link to take an AR quiz on the book you read.  The AR Quiz Numbers are shown in the images above (K-3: 176843 and 4th-5th: 192499).  You may log in to Renaissance through Clever or through the Renaissance Place link on the Scholars page (look on the right, with the turquoise and orange bars).  Remember, your user name for Renaissance is your whole 3505 number and your password is your birthday.  There are no leading zeros in the month or the date, and you should only type the last two digits for the year.

Here's an example:  If you were born June 2, 2013, your Renaissance password would be 6213.

Here's another example: If your birthday is March 17, 2009, your Renaissance password is 31709.

Once you log in, click on the large orange square that says Accelerated Reader.  Once you click on that, the page will change and you will see a search box at the top of the screen.  This is the place where you will type in the quiz number for the book you read/listened to.  (Remember, the quiz numbers are shown in the images above: 176843 or 192499). Both quizzes will read to you, too, if you'd like!  :)

Be sure to thank a veteran for their service on Veterans Day!  :)

Bonus Material:

Look at the Arlington National Cemetery on this Google Maps satellite view.  This is one of the many military cemeteries that are in the United States. Zoom in on this satellite view, and you will see lots of white dots in the green areas.  Those are headstones.  Click on the gold person in the bottom right corner to see it from ground level.  The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is here, as well.  This is where the President lays a wreath on a grave while a bugler plays taps during a special Veterans Day Ceremony each year.
