Physical Activity & Sports Studies
WHAT IS THE SUBJECT ABOUT?
Physical Activity and Sports Studies provides for a comprehensive study of physical activity and movement. It incorporates a study of the way the body functions and how to prepare to move efficiently in a variety of contexts. It includes study of the social issues related to physical activity and sport and its role in the lives of the individual and Australian society. It also has a focus on moving with skill in order to enjoy participation and to achieve performance goals, through recreational, leisure and adventure pursuits, competitive and non-competitive games, individual and group physical fitness activities and the use of physical activity for therapy and remediation.
WHAT WILL I LEARN?
Students will:
Develop a foundation for efficient and enjoyable participation and performance in physical activity and sport.
Develop knowledge and understanding about the contribution of physical activity and sport to individual, community and societal wellbeing.
Enhance the participation and performance of themselves and others in physical activity and sport.
Develop the personal skills to participate in physical activity and sport with confidence and enjoyment.

WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER BEFORE CHOOSING THIS SUBJECT?
You do not have to be an elite athlete to choose this subject, however, it would be beneficial for students to have an interest in physical activity. You will be assessed on your ability to apply knowledge in movement situations, planning and performance of various motor skills, including preparation and participation in outdoor recreation (camping).
A strong interest in the theory of human movement and performance.
An interest in sport sociology and history.
The course costs will include any excursion fees (such as approximately $100 for the overnight camp).
Physical Activity and Sports Studies can provide a good background for 2 Unit PDH PE in Years 11 and 12.
Possible career options include: teaching, sports science, sports administration, sports coaching, exercise science and physiology, sports psychology, sports media.
