Stage 5 - Year 9 & 10

Stage 5 is the name given to Years 9 and 10 of the compulsory years of schooling in NSW. It is a significant stage of school life eventually leading to the attainment of the Record of School Achievement at the end of Year 10.

The Record of School Achievement (RoSA) provides students with a record of their achievements if they leave school prior to completion of the Higher School Certificate. The School Certificate is no longer issued at the end of Stage 5 (Year 10) and instead the Record of School Achievement (RoSA) is issued.  The introduction of the RoSA represents the most significant change to secondary schooling in more than 10 years and replaces the School Certificate first introduced in 1965.

The RoSA is available electronically and as a verifiable hard copy on demand with the most up-to-date information on a student’s achievements for completed courses across all subjects, as well as the possibility of extra-curricular activities.

The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) has consulted widely with the teaching and broader community to ensure the RoSA balances the need to encourage students to stay at school for their HSC, while still offering a meaningful credential to those who choose to leave prior to the HSC.

To be eligible for a RoSA, students must have:

• Completed the mandatory curriculum requirements for Years 7 to 10.

• Attended a government school, an accredited non-government school or a recognised school outside NSW.

• Completed courses of study that satisfy Education Standards’ curriculum and assessment requirements for the RoSA.

• Complied with the requirements from the Education Act.
