Commerce is the study of the commercial environment, which involves the production, distribution and exchange of goods and services to satisfy individual and community wants.
Commerce provides the knowledge, skills, understanding and values that form the foundation on which young people make sound decisions on consumer, financial, business, legal and employment issues.
It should also provide a means whereby young people are made aware of the forces of change, in particular, rapid changes in information technology and increasing global commercial interdependence.
The students may study topics such as:
Consumer Choice, Law and Society, Employment Issues, Promoting and Selling, E-Commerce, Running a Business, Political Involvement and Travel.
Students will learn to :
Develop their knowledge and understanding of a wide range of commercial information and concepts e.g. use of cash and credit, budgeting, banking, marketing, employee rights in the workplace.
Develop a range of skills e.g. analysis of advertisements, writing business letters, basic accounting.
Develop attitudes and values related to the commercial environment and their involvement in it. e.g. consumer awareness, business ethics and responsibilities, environmental awareness.

There are no prerequisites for the study of Commerce. This subject provides many of the basic skills needed in everyday life. Any student who has an interest in learning how to be an informed consumer is encouraged to choose this subject.
If choosing Commerce it can provide a good background for the following HSC subjects – Economics, Business Studies and Legal Studies.
Career choices could include a variety of careers in the business world (eg advertising, accounting, tourism) and government.
