Week beginning - Monday 19th January 2026
Take a peek at all the amazing things we've been learning this week!
We have had another busy week in Year One where the children have once again blown us away with their curiosity, knowledge and creativity. In Phonics, we have continued to develop our knowledge of trigraphs. We have focussed on 'eer' (deer, cheer, steer, engineer) and 'ear' (hear, fear, appear, tears). The children have worked hard to decode and blend a variety of words which include these sounds, identify examples of these words in texts and create their own sentences using these words. The children have been very active in their maths lessons this week. We have been working on using a number line to 20 and solving addition problems to 20. The children have ordered numbers from smallest to greatest and greatest to smallest, jumped on from a given number on a number line to solve a variety of addition problems and continued to use ten frames and counters to further consolidate their understanding of how many tens and ones are in numbers to 20. Our inquiry this week has led to us exploring poetry. The children have read poems, identified the features of a poem and worked hard to plan and write their own poems drawing inspiration from our core text 'Between Tick and Tock' and their knowledge of the parts of a plant. Our inquiry into plants continued into our art work this week where the children were very excited to begin working on their own William Morris inspired designs. We look forward to seeing how these designs develop as the weeks progress.
