Stars of Education Finalist

Katy Hamilton

My name is Katy Hamilton and I have been with OKCPS since I was an assistant at Horace Mann Elementary in 2006. It was working there that I fell in love with the children, atmosphere, and teaching and knew that I wanted to be a special education teacher. I graduated from University of Central Oklahoma in 2009 and got my first teaching job at Kaiser Elementary. My first classroom was actually my 1st grade classroom when I was a student there many years ago. I taught at Kaiser until I was given my dream job opportunity at Ridgeview Elementary in August 2015 as their new pre-k special education teacher. I stayed at Ridgeview until my program transferred this year to The Pre-K Center at Johnson.

My greatest reward is seeing my students love school and wanting to be here every day. We celebrate everything from sitting down in their chairs to learning a new skill. It often takes my students a little bit longer to learn a skill but that doesn’t mean they can’t do something. Most days teaching doesn’t feel like a job because I love what I do. It can be stressful and I have a bag of tricks that I use on a daily basis, but at the end of the day, I wouldn’t change a thing.  I love my job and our district and can’t think of a better place to work. OKCPS will always be my one and only home. I am honored to be the Johnson PreK Center teacher of the year; I can think of no greater compliment to receive from my peers. It truly fills my heart to be considered for this award among so many deserving candidates.
