In the second week of school Dana’s Room 211 class enjoyed learning about art.
It started by learning about the artist that they were going to model - Sandra Silberzweig. As described by one student, “Sandra Silberzweig has a condition (synesthesia) that allows her not to see lines the way others do so when she was drawing she sometimes drew different types of lines from what other people might draw – e.g. a spiral on one cheek and a dotted line with a spiral on another cheek.”
The artist has shared “I have no fear of color > It lives in my soul, dances in my heart > Spills out of my fingers flowing down a canvas.”
Students learned from this story that you don’t have to follow the instructions in art and can express yourself how you want – you can doodle, do different types of lines and that’s ok. This is your art.
Students then learned about and incorporated 4 elements of design: line, texture, shape and colour. They explored the colour wheel and analogous colours (colours beside each other on the colour wheel). Students were challenged to use three analogous colours at a time in each section of the portrait. In their art, students painted the colour wheel!
As shared by students – We created MASTERPIECES that we are very proud of. Our artwork really catches your eye as you walk by in the hall. Here is what we learned and what we feel about this project...
Colouring and blending the colours was fun. ~ Rasmus
I thought it was so cool how the different lines came together to make a beautiful masterpiece. ~ Avery
I enjoyed how the techniques we learned helped to blend the analogous colours together. ~ Liam
Something that I learned was that art does not need to be realistic to be pretty. ~ Florence
I learned that analogous colours are colours that are beside each other on the colour wheel and they complement each other really well. ~ Imogen
One thing I liked was how the texturing made the portrait really pop out. ~James
